  • Slitscan imaging techniques are used to create static images of time-based phenomena. In traditional film photography, slit scan images are created by exposing film as it slides past a slit-shaped aperture. In the digital realm, thin slices are extracted from a sequence of video frames, and concatenated into a new image.
  • "Glass showed his genius in serving an overlooked demographic - stylish hipsters who secretly enjoy hearing "Most interesting character I ever met" stories, but wouldn't be caught dead with Readers Digest. Like all the best innovations, this one provides the innovator more leisure time, allowing Glass to make his smarmy introductions, then step aside and really concentrate on that lozenge, while hired goons like former Harper's editor Paul Tough and the overexposed, undertalented Sarah Vowell (herself an EGG semifinalist) do the dirty work."
  • "Ambivalent about pedophilia? The novel is never ambivalent about Humbert. It's enthusiastic about him, supports him, and cheers his every move - because it's told in first person, by the molester. Thus, every perversion, every abuse, every day that Humbert holds Lolita prisoner is seen as Keatsian poetry. Of course it never condemns Humbert; it champions him. It's what you call irony, as big as a barn, and Lyne has missed it so completely you wonder if a man with his eyesight should be allowed to drive. If Lyne has actually made a film purporting to show both sides of child-fucking can you blame the mob?"

  • I'm pleased to announce the release of djangoembed, a django app for consuming and providing rich media. OEmbed is a format for allowing a rich representation of a url. If you've used Facebook you've probably seen this feature before — linking a YouTube video will embed an actual video player in the news feed, automatically. The player is represented by some HTML, plus there may be additional metadata like the author, a link to their channel, the title of the video, or even a thumbnail.
  • A simple jQuery plugin that uses OEmbed API to help displaying embedded content (such as photos or videos) in your website.
  • oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites. The simple API allows a website to display embedded content (such as photos or videos) when a user posts a link to that resource, without having to parse the resource directly.

  • There are examples of curves (in the sense of continuous maps from the real line to the plane) that completely cover a two-dimensional region of the plane. We give a construction of such a Peano curve, adapted from David Hilbert's example. The construction is inductive, and is based on replacement rules.

  • Because of programmers' traditional slavish adherence to Euler-angle rotation methods, there would seem, at first, to be no way out of the "uncommanded z-rotation" dilemma. But in fact, as first pointed out by Ken Shoemake (at SIGGRAPH '85), quaternion algebra provides a solution to this very problem.

Quaternions were conceived (as an extension of complex numbers to higher dimensions) in 1843 by the mathematician William Hamilton. They bear a strong resemblance to complex numbers - that is, numbers of the form a + bi, where a is a real number and bi is the so-called imaginary term (i being equivalent to the square root of -1). A quaternion is a four-component number (hence the name) of the form:

    q = a + bi + cj + dk

Overview: Art/Science Convergence as Emerging Art Field
Science and art - twin pillars of creativity and innovation in any dynamic culture. Commonly they are seen as different as day and night. Many contemporary artists reject this. They are creating revolutionary art at the frontiers of scientific research that is breathtaking in its creative reach and mind-stretching in its assault on traditional categories.

  • Field is a development environment for experimental code and digital art in the broadest of possible senses. While there are a great many development environments and digital art tools out there today, this one has been constructed with two key principles in mind:

Embrace and extend — rather than make a personal, private and pristine code utopia, Field tries to bridge to as many libraries, programming languages, and ways of doing things as possible. Live code makes anything possible — Field tries to replace as many "features" with editable code as it can. Its programming language of choice is Python — a world class, highly respected and incredibly flexible language.

  • CINDER PROVIDES A POWERFUL, INTUITIVE TOOLBOX for programming graphics, audio, video, networking, image processing and computational geometry. Cinder is cross-platform, and in general the exact same code works under Mac OS X, Windows and a growing list of other platforms — most recently the iPhone and iPad.

Cinder is designed to take advantage of platforms’ native capabilities whenever it’s possible, and relies on a minimum of 3rd party libraries. This makes for much lighter, faster applications, and means Cinder apps get free performance, security and capability upgrades whenever the operating system does.

  • Processing Layers is a simple library for the Processing languange. The concept of layering is very familiar to anyone who uses drawing tools like Photoshop or Gimp. This library allows Processing developers to create sketches with multiple layers that are drawn independently of one another. Each layer has its own draw() method. This indepedence between layers allows some layers to change without affecting others. For example, you can use a layer to animate some thing without having to redraw everything that is "behind" it. Layers can be added and removed from a sketch dynamically.

  • This formula creates some beautiful and very organic shapes that can be used in other graphics to make a dynamic graphic composition (either interactive or static). Doing this in Matlab or Mathematica is interesting, but I wanted to make something a little more interactive, minimal and fun to play with so I designed a application that can be used to create these shapes and render an image of them at a super high resolution, like the image below (5333×2100). I’m developing a 3D version of this that should be stellar to play with, coming very soon

  • "When a non-numeric character is anywhere in the string, all is well: ColdFusion serializes the JSON properly. In the cases where an identification number consists of a collection of numeric values only (i.e., 000123), ColdFusion's SerializeJSON function will convert this value (000123) from a string to a number (123.0). I tried a few things to fix it, Googled for answers, but had no luck. "

It abstracts the hardware pins from their function and supports serial communications, allowing sounds to be played on remote hardware (PC or synthesizer) without additional coding.

It comprises of Arduino source code to:

    Process analog input
    Process digital input
    Play individual notes
Play music (using the Armstrong Music Format)
Transmit the notes played to a PC (via USB/serial)
    Send MIDI out messages

  • The thumb piano, known as a kalimba or mbira and by many other names, is a lamellaphone that uses plucked prongs called tongues, keys or tines to generate acoustic vibrations. The length of the tine determines the pitch.

Generally, the thumb piano uses some kind of mechanism to create a great deal of pressure to anchor the tines across 2 bridges which allows the free lengths of the tines room to vibrate. The tines are usually of the same material and gauge (thickness) to ensure consistency so the pressure is distributed equally holding everything in place and in tune.

  • "Jon Williams, of EFX-TEK, suggested that to control the angle of sensitivity, the sensor could be mounted in a PVC end cap and an appropriate length of PVC fitted to control the angle. I tried this using a three inch end cap as shown at left. The first thing I discovered was that the mounting holes on the circuit board are very small and require nothing larger than a 2-56 screw. There's really no room to drill out the holes any larger without damaging the circuit board. I also found that if you want to use a three pin servo type connector, you'll probably need to drill a hole in the cap to accommodate this connector as shown at right."

  • The LED series/parallel array wizard is a calculator that will help you design large arrays of LEDs. The LED calculator was great for single LEDs–but when you have several, the wizard will help you arrange them in a series or combined series/parallel configuration. The wizard determines the current limiting resistor value for each portion of the array and calculates power consumed. All you need to know are the specs of your LEDs and how many you'd like to use.

  • The Floor Mat Switch works by spacing two strips of metal apart with thin squares of foam in-between them every .75 inches. The pairs of metal strips are spaced out 2.5 inches from each other for the length of the mat. When someone steps on the mat their weight presses the two metal strips together creating a closed contact. All the strips are connected down both sides of the mat creating one large switch.

The individual strips can be cut apart to create individual switches and the mat itself can be cut into pieces for placing the switches any where you wish around a room.

The Switch Floor Mat is a perfect low cost solution for monitoring large areas of floor space. The mat is most often used in security applications, but is also used for projects such as interactive arts, stage triggers for plays, animal behavior tracking, and more. The mat can be placed underneath carpeting.
